The M45 Land Warrior gas mask was originally designed for helicopter pilots. (As I was informed) When special forces units got a look at the M45 mask they wanted to get their hands on them for testing immediately, it wasn't long before the M45 became part of the M45 Land Warrior project and standard mask for special forces. Many upgrades of the M45 mask included new improved softer silicon rubber to make the mask more comfortable to the user. Many metal parts were replaced with plastic, which were more resistant to certain chemical agents that reacted to metals. The front and side voicemitters were upgraded as well and the eyelets were specially designed for use with NVG's, Night Vision Goggles. The mask was perfect for special forces use. The mask gained popularity and was at one time was destined to replace the M40 series becoming the new standard mask. Then came the JSGPM (M50 which changed that. The M45 is considered a scarce mask on the market and still one of the best out there.
